Resourceful Backpacking Bars Made in Bulk!

As a non-profit, hosting thousands of backpacking trips over the years, one staple recipe has dominated our lunches: flapjacks.

Made in house, curated to allow multiple flavour adaptations, and simple, these backpacking bars have sustained our hikers for decades. It is not infrequent for volunteers, campers, and parents to request this recipe for nostalgia sake. Now you can find the recipe right here with some successful and tested variations (see below).

Recipe:

6-1/2 cups brown sugar
6-1/2 cups soft margarine
24 cups rolled oats
1 tbsp salt

Bake in one 18 x 24 inch pan at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. One serving is 3 inches by 4 inches (or cut 6 x 8 in the pan).

Coconut Lemon Variation - Dairy/Gluten/Egg Free

Add to basic recipe:

         5 cups coconut
         1 cup lemon juice
         2 tbsp. vanilla

Cranberry-Crunch Variation - Dairy/Gluten/Egg Free

Add to basic recipe:

         8 cups cornflakes
         2 cups honey
         4 cups craisins
1 tbsp. vanilla

Mint Chocolate Chip Variation - Gluten/Egg Free

Add to basic recipe:

         1 tsp. mint extract
         3 cups chocolate chips
         Green sprinkles if desired

S’more Variation - Gluten/Egg Free

Add to basic recipe:

         2 cups broken graham crackers
         2 cups chocolate chips
         2 cups marshmallows
         2 tbsp. vanilla
